Based in Scotland, Trees for Life has a great project - the Red Return - to save the red squirrel.

For 3 years now, they have been capturing red squirrels and taking them off to new forest.

It's been a very successful project.  So far, 132 red squirrels have been released in six different locations.  And the squirrels have been seen checking out their new homes and breeding, as well!  Locals have seen the red squirrels in nearby forests and gardens.  The project is looking to re-introduce red squirrels to 8 new forests and it would enable new populations of red squirrels to grow and thrive in these areas, safe from grey squirrels.

You could pop a note in a card and say you've made a donation on your loved one's behalf to this very important project.

You could also adopt a red squirrel with a Wildlife Trust.

There are 47 Wildlife Trusts in the UK, and three of them offer an Adopt a Red Squirrel pack.

Adopt a red squirrel through Dorset, South and West Wales or the Northern Wildlife Trusts and you can help support their work to protect and conserve the red squirrel.  Available from £20, this is a great gift idea!

Here's a Sitting Squirrel Soft Toy - I couldn't resist adding him!

Now this doesn't support a red squirrel project directly, but this little red squirrel soft toy could help nurture a love of wildlife in youngters - and frankly, I wouldn't mind him at home, either!

This sitting squirrel is available from the National Trust  Online Shop for £12.00.

He's soft and attached to him is a small swing tag with facts about the squirrel, its habitat and food.   The squirrel measures about  140 x 140 x 90 [mm].
