Australia’s iconic cutie, the koala, is in trouble. The humans have been at it again. Cutting down their habitat for development and agriculture has destroyed a lot of their habitat. Raging wildfires have either killed a lot of koalas, injured them, or left the ones who survived without anything to eat or drink. Dog attacks, climate change and hits by cars have all contributed to the loss of koalas. And the koala is susceptible to disease – chlamydia. A new vaccination will hopefully help. In the meantime, koalas remain cute and cuddly, and lots of people want to help them which is fantastic. The fact that you’re on the hunt for a koala to adopt as a gift means a lot, both to the people helping koalas and probably to the koalas themselves. Many adoption programmes help care for koalas who’ve been rescued from wildfires or injured in road accidents. These trees give these gorgeous koalas food, shelter and safety. Organisations, supported by lots of koala and nature lovers, are planting lots and lots of trees with volunteer tree planting days. Landowners in some cases (Bangalow Koalas) are giving up land so that a wildlife corridor can be planted for koalas and other wildlife.
